NOTE: Supported printers must be connected to a wireless or wired network having an active Internet connection to install the firmware updates. If your printer is connected to the computer through a USB cable, this firmware update method is not available and you will have to download the firmware from the HP website.

Go to the HP printer update feature.

Note: Menu names and specific icons vary by printer and models.

    • For Printers with an ePrint button or icon:
    • Touch or Press the HP ePrinticon/ button.
    • Touch or press the Settingsor Setup if required.
    • Then, touch or press the Product Updateor Check Product Updates option.
    • For Printers with text-based menus:
    • Select the Setup/Settingsmenu
    • Next, Select Preferences/Printer Maintenance/ Tools
    • Then, select Web Services/Printer Update/LaserJet Update.
  1. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable the Web Services and setup automatic firmware updates. Enabling the web services will set up the Internet connection of the printer so that it can receive updates.
  2. Sometimes, your printer may not automatically start the update process, then, select the Check for Updates option or a similar menu to start the firmware update process.

Updating the printer firmware for HP printer connected to a computer with WindowsBefore starting the firmware update process, you should ensure that you have turned on your HP printer and also, connected it to the computer through your local network or using a USB cable.

  • Go to HP Customer Support and then select Software and Driver Downloads.
  • ‘Let’s identify your product to get started’ page will be displayed, click on Printer to select it from other HP products.
  • For your printer identification, you will have to type the model number of your HP printer, and then click on Submit.
  • The software results page for your specific printer will be displayed along with the selected default operating system.
  • In case you want to change the version of your Windows, you should click on Change and then select your version, and then click Change.
  • Click on Firmware, and then select Download option.
    In case you see that a Firmware section is not listed, that means no update is currently available for your HP printer.
  • After downloading the Firmware, save the downloaded file to your computer.
  • Locate the file on your computer and then open it to start with the installation process.
  • As the HP Printer Update window will open, look for the displayed printer serial number.
  • If the serial number has been displayed, select the checkbox beside it, and then click on Update.
  • If the serial number has been displayed but you see that the status is 'not applicable', it suggests that you do need the firmware update. Therefore, Click on Cancel.
  • If the serial number has not been displayed and your printer uses a wireless network connection, you must connect a USB cable to your HP printer and computer. Wait for about 20 seconds, and then click on Refresh button. As the serial number displays, select the checkbox against it and then click on Update.
  • Click OK on completion of the firmware update process.
  • In case you have used a USB cable to update your network printer, you must remove the USB driver installed by Windows.
  • Search Windows for the printer control panel

  • Click on View Devices and printers.
  • Right-click on the USB printer device which matches your printer model, and then select on Remove Device.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from your HP printer and the computer, and then restart your computer.

Updating the printer firmware for HP printer connected to a Mac.

Before starting the firmware update process, you should ensure that you have turned on your HP printer and also, connected it to the computer through your local network or using a USB cable.

  • Go to HP Customer Support and then select Software and Driver Downloads.

  • In case you want to change the version of your macOS or OS X, you should click on Change and then select your version, and then click Change.
  • Click on Firmware, and then select Download option.

  • When the printer firmware download process is complete, open the [Printer_name].dmg file.
  • Double-click on the HP Firmware Updater.
  • Select the name of your printer and click on it, and then click on Continue.
  • The updater will then check the firmware version that has been installed on your HP printer, and then it will display the results in the Update Information window.
  • If you see that ‘Device is ready to be reflashed’ displayed, click on the Continue to update the firmware.
  • Click on Done after the completion of the printer firmware update process.
  • If you see ‘This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device’ is displayed that indicates that the printer firmware is already updated to the most recent version. Thereafter, Click on Cancel to exit the updater.

Install HP printer firmware updates through the HP Smart app

You can also use the HP Smart app to check for the firmware updates and installation of the printer updates.

  1. Download the HP Smart app and then install the app on your computing device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) in case you have not installed it previously.
  2. After completion of the HP printer setup, click on your HP printer model name.
  3. Go to Advanced, and then select Printer Home Page (EWS) or select the Advanced Settings.
  4. Click on Tools or Web Services.
  5. Click on the Printer Updates or Product Update, and then click on Check Now.
